His experiences as a pilot fighter included a NATO mission, where he intercepted an armed Russian-crewed TU-16 bomber near his carrier in the Mediterranean in May of 1969. By all accounts, he was one of the best Navy pilots flying the most challenging and dangerous aircraft of that time. John became one of the original “Top Gun” instructors. ![]() A handful of pilots with reputations as “the best in the fleet” were selected to participate in this program which then convinced the Navy to establish their “Top Gun” school for fighter pilots. John participated in a (then) classified program to evaluate the Mig 21 using an aircraft secured by Israel through an Iraqi defector. He was a naval aviator flying the F8 Crusader, the most challenging carrier-based interceptor of its era, often under very difficult conditions in part because F-8s flew on the Navy’s oldest (renovated WW2 vintage) and smallest aircraft carriers, as they were light enough to fly from ships of this size.Īfter he received his wings, he went on to the Naval Justice School in Newport and became a JAG (Judge Advocate General), lawyer/judge under the uniform code of military justice. In 2022 John was inducted into the Fryeburg Academy Hall of Excellence.Īfter college, John volunteered for active duty and began a very exciting and distinguished naval career during the Vietnam War from 1966-1971. He was a graduate of Nassan College and served as captain of the ski team while winning the NCAA Division 2 Championship. He won the gold medal at the State Meet in ski jumping and participated in student council, one-act plays, the senior drama, as well as the Latin and French Clubs. John was a varsity member of the football, baseball and ski teams (captain 1962-’63). He grew up and was educated in Fryeburg, and graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1963. John was born in Fryeburg to Thomas and Dorothy McSherry on Jan. McSherry passed away at his home in the Keys on March 30, 2023. Survivors include his wife of forty-eight years, Kathie McElroy McSherry his children, Dana McSherry (Kent Greenfield) of Cambridge, MA, Brian McSherry (Meg) of Newton, MA, Colin McSherry (Hilary) of Merrick, NY, and Matthew McSherry (Sara) of Rockville Centre, NY his sister Eileen McSherry Wallace (Edward) his grandchildren, Lilly, Ruby, Emma, Henry, Charlie, Baby Girl McSherry (expected in December) and Baby Boy McSherry (expected in February) and his step-grandson, Liam Greenwell. He will be fondly remembered for his great generosity, warm heart, and smiling eyes. Retirement also allowed for more time at The Lake in Pennsylvania, where John loved to grow fruits and vegetables for family and friends in his large garden, craft things for those he loved in his wood shop, and most of all, spend time with his large family, especially his grandchildren. He delighted in the professional and personal accomplishments of Kathie, Dana, Brian, Colin and Matthew.Īfter retirement, John and Kathie spent time in Florida each year, making new friends and memories. Although John was proud of his work, he was prouder of his family. In 2016, he retired from JPMorgan Chase & Co as an Executive Director. John was a banker, serving as a Vice President at the Bank of New York from 1996 – 2004, and as a Principal at Mercer Investment Consulting from 2004 – 2010. They lived for a few years in Floral Park, NY, before establishing their longtime home in Merrick, NY, where they raised their four children and where extended family and friends were always welcome. Four years later, he married Kathie McElroy. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1970. John was born on May 30th, 1948 to Ellen Broderick McSherry and James Charles McSherry, in New York, NY. John Joseph McSherry, 74, passed away on October 31st, 2022, at South Shore Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Freeport, NY.
